According to wikipedia, cats in Ancient Egypt "Mau", were considered sacred in ancient Egyptian society. It has been estimated that cats were first domesticated about 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent.
Dedicated to justice and execution the goddess Madfet was a lion hedded goddess. Eventually the cat goddess Bast ( or Bastet ) replaced Madfet and she became the deity representing protection, fertility, and motherhood. Some cats received mummification after death ( same as humans ). Mummified cats were giving in offer to Bastet. In 1888, an Egyptian farmer found a tomb with mummified cats and kittens. There were penalties for injuries or killings of cats. People worshiped the cat Goddess, That often was represented as half boy and half girl. That goddess was Bastet. The earliest women Egyptian goddess was called Mandate. She described in the Pyramid Texts as killing a serpent with her claws.
